SABIAN Corner: Hitting the High Note
Each month, The Canadian Music Scene will feature a column (The SABIAN Corner) authored by a representative from SABIAN, the New Brunswick-based company that serves as the world’s leading cymbal-manufacturer. In the following debut of the column, SABIAN President Dan Barker gives us a 101 lesson on cymbals, provides resources for aspiring drummers, and what else-gives a shout out to the music scene in Canada! Hello Canadian music fans! On behalf of our entire team at SABIAN, I’m thrilled to be able to announce that we will be regular contributors to this web site. As one of the few music manufacturers in Canada, SABIAN knows the importance of staying dialed-in to the local music scene; from artists to venues to equipment, we’ve got some of the best music-related stuff the world has to offer! In terms of this column, we’re going to have a different staffer write the ‘SABIAN Corner’ every month in order to better inform you about different aspects of the percussion, drumming and music scenes. To give you a little background about the company, SABIAN was launched over two decades ago by Robert Zildjian, who named the company after his three children: Sally, Billy and Andy. Utilizing centuries-old craftsmanship and expertise from master craftsman from right here in Meductic, New Brunswick, SABIAN has become one of the most successful and influential cymbal companies in the world. For those of you with limited drumming knowledge, most cymbal sets contain hi-hats, splashes, crashes, rides and Chinese cymbals. Often considered the punctuation marks of percussion and drumming, cymbals are also used as the main time keeper- the constant metronome. The difficulty in crafting cymbals, particularly for professional players, is the subtle sound nuances that are preferred for each style and artists that we encounter – not only from one cymbal to the next, but for the overall cymbal set sound as a whole. In creating these tonal recipes, SABIAN has emerged as one of the premier cymbal manufacturers because our expert team personally works with artists to create specific sounds tailored to artist preferences. If you’ve ever wanted to play cymbals, drums, or in any form of percussion, there exist a number of resources to help you get started. In addition to actually visiting your local music shop or drum store, the web has a ton contacts with informative tips and free resources to utilize, including www.playdrums.com (part of the Percussion Marketing Council) and www.pas.org (Percussive Arts Society). Lastly, we’re excited about the up and coming music scene in the great north. In addition to sustaining established, veteran musicians such as SABIAN artist Neil Peart of Rush, Canada continues to produce musically-talented acts such as Nickelback and the Bare Naked Ladies, among others. Be sure to support rising musical stars in your local market. Until next time, be sure to visit your local drum shop to keep updated about new equipment and rising artists, and don’t forgot to hit the hi-hat! Your fellow Canadian musician/music fan, Dan |
