Record Title: Counterparts
Full and throaty bass sound, aggressive guitars, subdued keys. Vocals seem consistent with other albums and are not the most important thing about Rush to me. I like a mix of acoustic-based and electric-based songs. There should always be an instrumental too. |
Record Title: Counterparts
clear, powerful, rocking. great sounds for all the instruments. beautiful job. |
Record Title: Signals
Signals is perfection. |
Record Title: A Farewell To Kings
Best bass sound ever! Guitar solos are great. Dumming is great. Neils lyrics are good. Ged yells the highest I've ever heard him do on Cygnus X-1. But mainly it's the bass sound. |
Record Title: Hold Your Fire
Magnificent, warm, rich, atmospheric, perfect meld of keyboard and guitar. All instruments can be heard with perfect clarity yet forming a wall of sound in parts. A real 'widescreen' sound. |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
The production is stellar. Not one instrument isn't heard clearly, whether you're referring to Alex, Neil or Geddy. |
Record Title: Permanent Waves
Just a great sounding album |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
Crisp clear guitars, percussion and bass. An all round masterpiece of production. |
Record Title: Power Windows
PW has a wonderfully warm and cozy sound. |
Record Title: Counterparts
Best overall production sound. Warm, well-balanced sound with a lot of clarity and impact. Moving Pictures and Power Windows are strong contenders as well. |
Record Title: Counterparts
This album sounds fantastic. |
Record Title: Counterparts
Clean and crisp - you can hear everything - very little distortion when crancked. Hi Paul |
Record Title: Test For Echo
Presto would get the nod on technical merit, but to TFE has top-class technical parameters along with a harder, weight. Vapor Trails was a step in the wrong direction, too much compression has been added during mixing and mastering, maybe even during tracking (hard to hear). |
Record Title: Presto
Presto has a clean, dynamic sound. |
Record Title: Counterparts
Moving Pictures is usually my benchmark for quality, but Counterparts really shines as a modern day recording. I like Kevin Shirley's thick tones, spatial quality and overall stereo separation. Neil's drums sound fantastic. |
Record Title: Power Windows
Multi-timbral mix of all the instumentation is truly amazing. A milestone album in rock history. |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
My choice is Moving Pictures , for me it just a great sound! Everything sounds so good and precise, everything comes together beautifully! |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
moving pictures to me has balance and all the different aspects of the album are very dynamic.....i think the best guitar sound alex ever put down |
Record Title: Counterparts
A Nice bassy sound |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
everything |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
Though I have many Rush favorites, this album sound is so rich, full bass, everything is so clear and crisp, excellent. |
Record Title: Counterparts
I think the production and mixing are better on Counterparts than any other album they've made. (A close second being Test for Echo.) It's even, crisp and clean and LOUD without sounding so. By far the best, sound-wise, in my opinion. |
Record Title: Counterparts
Until this album's release I would have been battling between Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. No need to after this came out. Counterparts is the best sounding release by far, imo. I have them all, and love them all. But none of the others can match CP's power, separation, clarity, punch, growling lows, dynamics, and feel. |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
This album sounds huge! You'd almost think there are twice as many players in the band. The drums are well-mixed and panned, and they have punch but don't clip. The bass has the best growl I have ever heard recorded on an album, with highlights in every song. The guitar is multi-tracked to perfection as well. The organic crunch and smooth lead tones meld together with some very different synth sounds perfectly. Geddy's vocal mix was perfect as well. Pure and simple, this is the best rock record I have ever listened to. Not even just listened to, but experienced. |
Record Title: Counterparts
"Counterparts" sounds very clear. It captures all the instruments evenly and perfectly. The mix is very concise. You don't have to strain to hear anything. |
Record Title: A Farewell To Kings
Even though there is a lot going on in the music, the album has a beautiful sense of space. All instruments have a bright tone except Lees' Rickenbacker in the first half of Xanadu, which gets progressively growlier as the track goes on. The bands first foray into using keyboards pays off, Mini-Moog and Bass Pedals contrast each other well and are used to create a lot of extra effects:from wind noises to space-ship engines. As i uderstand the wood-blocks,temple-bells and wind chimes were recorded outside the studio(Rockfield in South Wales)which accidentally had a load of bird-song on it(or they could have added it later). |
Record Title: Power Windows
Power Windows has a deep, bright sound that just keeps on sounding better as you turn up the volume. The mix is clear and out front. |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
best overall for transient response and headroom |
Record Title: 2112
I simply love "temple of syrinx" and "bangkok" |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
Everything sounds perfect. |
Record Title: Caress Of Steel
THE BEST OF THE BEST (from the daze of ole),middle age MOVING PICTURES..Then COUNTERPARTS as of late,,PLEASE bring back BROON or even sir PETER COLLINS,,fire NORTHFIELD AND LEONARD..where ru Mr.LUDWIG?....something has gone astray since T4E....get it right this time out......digitalman_2112 from CP M B |
Record Title: Signals
Signals has a nice round and whole sound for me. The bass is awesome! I also like how this album, along with GUP, provided the catalyst for PW & HYF. Signals is a very important album in Rush's back catalogue - in my opinion! |
Record Title: Grace Under Pressure
Grace Under Pressure was the first album that was really produced by Rush themselves. Peter Henderson was no more than a sound engineer who was at the top of his game. Even in interviews, the band stressed that it was one of, if not their toughest album to make because production assistance was close to zero. Because Henderson was on top of his game. Alex's guitars sound majestic, while Geddy's Steinberger bass beats through the speaker with the usual Geddy Lee punch. The drums sound better than most recordings of today's music. Every cymbal and tom is heard clearly. The mix is PERFECT! I couldn't ask for a better sounding album than GUP |
Record Title: Vapour Trails
I've never heard the music to this CD, but just the drums portion I have heard on the AWIP video. This is the latest recording technology, the latest drum technology, the latest drum head technology, and I feel that Neil's DW drums sound better than any other drumset that he has ever recorded with. |
Record Title: Test For Echo
Test for Echo mixes the heavy crunch of Alex's guitar, but doesn't leave out the sublime little touches that make Test For Echo a great album sound-wise. The album seems to have the perfect balance, where the guitar may be turned up to 10 on the distortion, yet the bass and drums are crystal clear, making an overall excellent sound quality. |
Record Title: A Farewell To Kings
While I doubt AFTK will win, I like the ambience of it. The faint birdsong during Xanadu, the windchimes, there's a warmth to it that I love. |
Record Title: Grace Under Pressure
It is an edgey album they really put so much into this one from the lyrics to the musicianship. |

Record Title: Moving Pictures
Best overall sound for all instruments and masterful producing from Terry Brown |

Record Title: Moving Pictures
Moving Pictures ... a sonic masterpiece |
Record Title: Permanent Waves
This was my 1st experience of Rush, so naturally it has a special place in my Rushalogue. That said, I still chose this album over the others sound wise for many reasons. Like all Rush albums it has that 'wow' factor of a ripping opening track. That guitar work of the opening bars has become iconic. But the whole album has a sound that I think epitomises the stage Rush were at. It was a watershed album for them, moving away from the longer 'classier' tracks to more pithy, essential sounds. The early 80's was a time of great technological innovation. This is mirrored to an extent by the overall sound of the album. It has a technical, clinical even, edge to it that the previous work didn't have. Added to this is the immense skill displayed by three musicians at the top of their game. This is an album that has to be listened to in its' entirety to fully appreciate the production. It flows from bar one of 'Spirit' to the last sounds of the waves on 'Natural Science' (Not many albums achieve this; 'OK Computer' 'Wish You Were Here' and I can't think of any others off hand). It just works so well. Now that may be down to production, to composition or just plain luck. I don't know or really care why. I just know that 25 years on I still get blown away whenever I play this album. |
Record Title: 2112
I love the bass sound! |
Record Title: Power Windows
This album has such clarity. You can hear all the instruments well and there is the spaciousness which was typical of the 80's sound. Maybe not the most powerful sounding album as clarity is achieved by a generally tamer guitar and bass sound but for overall sound quality it is top. Hold Your Fire is a close 2nd. |
Record Title: Permanent Waves
for it's time, there is no crisper sound |
Record Title: Feedback
I felt they sounded more relaxed during the playing of these tracks. I guess what I am really trying to say is that they sounded like they were having fun performing these songs and it reflected in the overall sound of the album. It was a very enjoyable listen but all Rush albums are ... |
Record Title: Counterparts
To me, Counterparts is the best engineered and mixed album I think they did. Kudos to Peter Collins, The Caveman and the rest. The instruments seem really balanced on it and all are prominent in the mix. Geddy's vocals sound so clean and you can hear every bit of Neils drums and cymbols. I really love the tone of Alex's guitar. The mix of keyboards also blend in very nice. I love that the volume level does not appear to over distort when cranked up. A great rocking album overall for my musical preference. -Steve |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
Tough call between Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. The clarity of Permanent Waves is awesome, but Moving Pictures has such a nice overall balance and warmth to everything. Not one complaint sonically with this masterpiece. Drums, guitars, bass, synths and vocals all just sound so right. There's also a nice warm reverb that you don't notice at all until you notice it. So perfect. |
Record Title: RUSH
This album is a great album is overlooked alot... |
Record Title: Hemispheres
guitar tone |
Record Title: Signals
This is a hard one. I think for me Signals has the best overall production value and what a great driving album. Even my Signals LP still sounds great. Thanks! |
Record Title: Grace Under Pressure
This is a perfect example of how production can make strong songs even stronger! This could also be said about Caress of Steel, A Farewell to Kings and Vapour Trails but Grace under Pressure is the strongest. |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
Moving pictures (remastered) - While it may not be as clean or heavy sounding as later albums like counterparts, it is a relatively clear-sounding album. MP does not rely on the extreme layering of multiple guitar sounds like later albums. I particularly love the way the drums sound on this one - you can hear the appropriate timbre of each type of drum and block that Neil uses! |
Record Title: Signals
Good use of the synth! |
Record Title: Counterparts
A mix of old and new Rush, Everyday Glory... a sound of FM-Radio Oriented Music; along with other songs such as Cut To The Chase, is more of a "grungy" and "rocky" style of playing that encompases their older Carless of Steel Day's, with less, distorted and "heavy" sounds. |
Record Title: RUSH
I was interning that week at Toronto Sound under Terry Brown. I was also the tape op. When the first muddy stuff done at Eastern was played at 7:00 Am in the morning we all thought the band was going big. Their studio experience was very limited. That whole project was done in about one day for pennies, including the rental of the 12 string accousticfrom Long and Mcwade. The original guitar tracks were redone in first takes with a 100 watt Marshall head, one 4X12 bottom and a gibson 335 and was double tracked with a 15 IPS echo using a revox A77. The drums were so muddy Terry ran them through a dolby A deliberatley over driven to add some highs to the drum kit.. Considering the time, budget and poor tracks, the album did amazingly well thanks to Terry Brown. It truly sounded like shit, but Geddy turned Blue doing the one only take on Finding your way intro scream. For a $1000.00 project at best I challenge any band to top that success. We had lunch at the Thorncliffe mall nearby for $2.00 that day in October 1973.Toronto Sound had previously recorded very well a lot of sessions with other Canadians acts. They sounded good but most went nowhere. It goes to show you how things can work out. Signed: Nick Gurr nick.gurr042@sympatico.ca |
Record Title: Counterparts
Although it's not my favorite Rush album musically, there's something about Counterparts that really hits me in the gut sonically. Really nice mix and full roundness of lows, mids, and hi's. |
Record Title: Signals
Guitar sound is solid and alex has a balance that fits into the band...not overemphasized just right. |
Record Title: Counterparts
Have been a huge fan since '76 and I love this one ! Great overall mix ! Geddy's voice doesn't get lost in all the "busyness" of the music. The marriage of lyrics and music is wonderful. The music seperation is great as well. The organic feel of the guitars and drums are enhanced by the keyboards. One of their best efforts ! |
Record Title: 2112
The sound, and the agressive feel of the music and lyrics that provides power; yet the subtlety and melody of the album. It's a package deal. |
Record Title: Permanent Waves
The drums in Permanent Waves, and specifically, "Natural Science" are simply amazing. The power, projection, tone, attack, and timbre all combine to produce the most impressive Rush sound to date. It's that "old school" mixing, deeper drums and thicker drum heads that captures the whole picture..or moving picture.. |
Record Title: Vapour Trails
I'm just really enjoying the sound on this record. |
Record Title: Grace Under Pressure
The remaster really brings out the dynamics of this incredible album. I don't think I've had a better musical listening experience than listening to the remastered CD in my car, which at one time contained a quite impressive set of speakers, amps and subs. It was an almost 3D experience, you could almost "see" the guitar chords floating in the air. Such separation and dynamic texture exists in the mix. I really wish Rush would listen to the "sound" they had during their Permanent Waves to Grace period. IMO..Power, Hold and Presto have terrible guitar sounds (pinging anyone?) and terrible low-volume level trebly mixes (a real frustration with Presto, as it has such incredible songs, even the remaster doesn't help that one). |
Record Title: Hold Your Fire
Best arrangements of their music |
Record Title: Permanent Waves
I believe because of the Trident board at Morin Heights at the time. If they did not use this board, then the studio still gave them a great live in studio sound. Adam Coulombe Montreal |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
This album has the quintessential Rush sound starte with "Permanent Waves". Lots of punch on the bottom end with kick drum and bass. Not too cluttered. The frequencies are nicely blended so they have room to breathe. It helps that the songs are amazing as well. I'll contrast this with the sound of "Vapour Trails". Many great songs, but I can't listen to more than a couple of them in a row. I'm a big fan, but I getting listening fatigue hearing this CD at a reasonable volume .... LOUD. KB |
Record Title: Grace Under Pressure
There is something so dark and moving on this album. It is by far the most internal of their albums. |
Record Title: A Farewell To Kings
Because everything on this album is perfect.Guitars,Bass,Drums,Vocals even the effects.Rush is probably at thier best sound on this album |

Record Title: Fly By Night
For Drums, Fly By Night. For Guitar, Caress of Steel. For Bass, Farewell To Kings. Anything after 79 and after Terry Brown left just didn't live up. Hence the drop off in their catalog. Yes, Pictures was a good "album", but recording wise, inferior. |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
This is, of course, a very hard survey to nail down. In my opinion, there are actually 3 or 4 Rush albums that sing above the rest, in terns of their recording, mixing and production quality. By a narrow margine, my first choice is Moving Pictures. A perfect album. One of the best rock albums of all time. The recording and mixing quality is clear, well-rounded tonally, creative, and most importantly, musically appropriate at all times. Combine that with superb writing and performances and there you have it: The perfect album. My second choice is Counterparts, with the predominant credit to Kevin (Caveman) Shirley. Kevin brought to the plate a somewhat "new" approach to recording, or shall I say reserected, and that is the importance of Micing technique. He's not a "fix it in the mix" kind of guy. The difference in the final product is NOT subtle. This is a very in-your-face sounding Rush album. As it should be. Kudos to you Kevin. My Third choice is Permanent Waves - and Paul Northfield. Paul comes a close second to Terry brown as being largely responsible for taking Rush's sound and making it all it could (and can) be. Much like the George Martin/Geoff Emerick team did for the Beatles. Without Paul (or Terry), we would definitely have had a very different sounding Rush, both then and now. I've always likes the sound of Power Windows to... and... well, you get the picture. Thanks! |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
The drums are INSANE, Geddy's bass is absolutely PERFECT and the Guitars are everywhere and sublime in the mix. These facts are usually present for RUSH across the board but I think this album SUMs up the total experience and feeling. My experience may be tilted bucause I only own a couple RUSH compact discs and the rest are vinyl. It was hard to pick just one! |
Record Title: Roll The Bones
Not at heavy as previous albums, its an album for all moods. Rupert Hines really got it right 2nd time round |
Record Title: Hold Your Fire
HYF is textured with full, rich sounds. The warm mood this album creates is extremely satisfying. Geddy's bass riffs come through very smoothly and the ambient quality of each note creates a very enjoyable listening experience. |
Record Title: Power Windows
Power Windows is the most crisp and clean sounding Rush album. All of the sounds on PW are very bright - nothing is overdriven. Might just be my ears but the EQ is perfect. I can hear everything. On some Rush albums, there are "events" that are there but I have to strain to hear them, not the case with PW. Additionally, on some other Rush albums there is a bit too much Bass (lows)in the EQ or maybe too much Treble (highs) and yet on some albums there's even too much mids, not on PW. This is why I believe that Power Windows is the best sounding Rush album. |
Record Title: Test For Echo
This album has such an organic and positive sound. It's the racording of the drums that is astounding, for example on Driven, right before the bass solol, Neil plays a swell with the floor tom and I beleive the ride and it sounds like it's jumping out of the speaker. Also, I think it was engineer Cliff Norrel that was able to make the opening and closing rythms of the high hat present throughout the record, which Neil stated to be impressed by in his instructional dvd A Work In Progress. I also love all the textures in this record, for example, over dubbuing of acoustic guitars and the power of Geddy's harmonies. |
Record Title: Hemispheres
very clear and the way the balance is mixed..its just brillant |
Record Title: Hemispheres
Hemispheres, because Terry Brown continued to disagree and challenge the band until the final recording of Signals. Brown disagreed with an overly heavy reggae influence on Digital Man. Now with the latest producer for their 2007 album, they chose him because the band "agreed" with his opinion of how the songs originally are taking shape. Under Terry Brown the songs are warm and Geddy Lee's vocals are not so self assured. I could be wrong. |
Record Title: Permanent Waves
I really believe that Permanent Waves and not Moving Pictures was the "mainstream" breakout alblum. I was hooked once I heard 2112 as a teenager and the rest they say is history. |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
Beautiful, warm and punchy - Credits to Bob Ludwig for the remastered CD (1997) Brilliant craftsmanship |
Record Title: A Farewell To Kings
Very unique sound on this album, as a whole. The mix of instruments and vocals are true, but ultimately, I like how there seems to be a darker feeling in this particular studio's sound. |
Record Title: Hemispheres
The bass runs on this album are some of the best I've ever heard |
Record Title: Test For Echo
Warm big sound missing from other Rush albums, especially in the natural sounding drums. |

Record Title: Snakes and Arrows

Record Title: Snakes and Arrows
Great Project, full tilt sound |

Record Title: Moving Pictures
Loved the drum sound on Moving Pictures - I dont think it has ever been bettered. Worked with Matt Butler at Rockfield on our Cynic Album,(2006) and visited AIR Studios Montserrat on Honey Moon. Rockfield albums are excellent - its a great studio - with great sound |
Record Title: Snakes and Arrows
This CD sounds great! I think this is the best Rush sound since Power Windows. |
Record Title: Snakes and Arrows
Incredible dynamic range; the instruments just sound lush and full! I love listenting to the production on this album almost as much as the music! |
Record Title: Snakes and Arrows
...for everything... |
Record Title: Test For Echo
S&A is a real close 2nd but I'd have to say T4E has the edge. I like the way the tom sound is mixed up more on T4E. I think the way the album is mixed brings out what the songs wanted to be. I wish the tom sound on S&A could be more like T4E and I think it's just a matter of levels at mix time. That was just the choice that was made. Still sounds great though. Guitars on T4E cut a little more as well. But again, I think that's just a by-product of the kind of songs they are. S&A has tons of texture. And don't get me wrong, S&A is awesome. Bass sound on both records are great as usual. I will say there is a TON of low end on the S&A CD itself. I find myself rolling it back a bit in the car. I just like T4E's sound better cause it's crunchier. Last thing, when I go back and listen to PW it still kills. That's a great record as well. Man, there's too many, I gotta go... Tim |
Record Title: Snakes and Arrows
The sound on Rush's most recent release is awesome! I have been a fan for many, many years and each albums seems to further embrace the technology available and excelling to the next level. Snakes and Arrows MVI release elevates the bands sound to the next level and is well worth the additional cost. |
Record Title: Snakes and Arrows
I've never heard such crisp, crystal clear sound quality before on a Rush album. I don't if it was Allaire or Nick or both, but if I were them I would get Nick to produce the next album at Allaire also. |

Moving Pictures sounds best to my ears. The SSL board at LeStudio may be the reason. The clarity and crispness of this record is unsurpassed anywhere. The richness Witch Hunt, the sound of the oberheim keyboards and the drum mix is totally awesome. T Metz SF,CA |

I became a RUSH fan at the release of this album. So it has been a benchmark of how I compare all other RUSh albums. |

Record Title: Moving Pictures
yyz is the best instrumental ever. period. rush got way to deep into keyboards later, but tom sawyer had the perfect mix of key boards and rush's traditional sound. excelent guitar on limelight, and red barchetta, both of which include some of geddy Lee's best vocl performances. excellent drums. Neil peart rules! |
Record Title: Signals
Bass and drums sound was incredible. Need to get back to louder, more pronounced rhythm section. |
Record Title: Permanent Waves
Think it's hard to say "best sound" since, moreso with Rush than a lot of others, their sound is their own. So my consideration is based on "sound I associate most closely with my favorite Rush era". In that light, it would be basically anything in the 2112 to MP period. Chose Permanent Waves as a good representation. |
Record Title: Counterparts
If you have ears, this should be obvious! |

Record Title: Permanent Waves
Seemed to be Mastered extremely well and the fact that it was the first record to be recorded at Le Studio. |
Record Title: 2112
Raw RUSH. Their most inventive sounds. |
Record Title: Hemispheres
Although I am a bassist myself I think the guitar sounds on Hemispheres were and are truly 'classic'. The layered textures of electric and acoustic with the doubling of guitars and chorus effect fill out the sound to provide a lush wash that compliments the work done by Geddy and Neil. |
Record Title: Moving Pictures
Moving Pictures, for me just is the quintessential Rush Album and Rush sound. The sound is lean and purposeful. The following albums sound overproduced to me. A lot of extra stuff I find myself listening through to hear what is going on. |
